Uses Zopiclone belongs to a group of medications called cyclopyrrolones. It acts on receptors in the brain (GABA receptors) causing the release of a chemical called GABA (gamma amino butyric acid). GABA is a major inhibitory chemical in the brain involved in inducing sleepiness and control of anxiety and fits.
Zopiclone acts by increasing the activity of GABA, thereby reducing the functioning of certain areas of the brain. This results in sleepiness, a decrease in anxiety and relaxation of muscles.
Zopiclone is most commonly used to treat insomnia. It decreases the time taken to fall asleep and increases the length of time spent sleeping. As zopiclone remains active in the body for many hours, drowsiness may occur the next day.
Dosage and administration Most patients are instructed to take one 7.5mg Zopiclone tablet shortly before sleeping. Tablets should be swallowed whole and washed down with a full glass of water. Patients are only advised to use this medication when they have 8 or more hours to sleep, as waking earlier may result in drowsiness until the effects have completely worn off. Do not exceed the dosage your doctor has prescribed you.
